Meet Marcella Jackson, FASEB (Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology).
Experimental Biology 2015 - Six strong scientific societies meeting in one location: a lot of opportunities for life science enthusiasts and career seekers.
This multidisciplinary, scientific meeting features plenary and award lectures, pre-meeting workshops, oral and posters sessions, on-site career services and exhibits of an array of equipment, supplies and publications required for research labs and experimental study.
KLEMEN: Hello everyone, this is Klemen from BioSistemika. I am here in Boston, at the Experimental Biology with Marcella Jackson, FASEB (Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology). Marcella, can you introduce yourself to people who don't know you?
MARCELLA: Yes, thank you! My name is Marcella Jackson, I am with FASEB, which is the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology and I am the Director of the Office of Scientific Meetings and Conferences...
KLEMEN: ... and also the main organizer of this event.
MARCELLA: We are the management company of the logistics for Experimental Biology.
KLEMEN: So, it is a huge event. We have a booth here and we were shocked about how many people came around and how many people are, in general, present here. Can you give us some of the numbers?
MARCELLA: Right now, the show’s been open since Friday. Today is Monday, we have over 14 000 attendees and we have almost 400 exhibitors at the show, and we are still accepting other registrants and walk-ons each day and we go through Wednesday.
KLEMEN: Obviously, the name is Experimental Biology, but what is the focus of this event?
MARCELLA: The focus is on six separate societies who all gather together and focus on basic life sciences areas: anatomy (AAA), physiology (APS), pathology (ASIP), biochemistry (ASBMB), nutrition (ASN) and pharmacology (ASPET), so six strong societies meeting in one location.
KLEMEN: Is the show going to get bigger in the next few years?
MARCELLA: Every city is different. We go from the East Coast to the West Coast, but we’ve been holding steady with the good 14 000 attendees. It is an exciting show, especially for students, we have a lot of PhDs, a lot of university folks; we have a career centre and a lot of opportunities for learning about the basic sciences and getting involved with various societies.
KLEMEN: Where and when is the next show gonna be?
MARCELLA: The next show is in sunny San Diego, in 2016, April 2nd-6th. We would love to have anyone come and join us. It is a very lovely area to visit if you haven’t. It is a great convention centre, great place to have a show.
KLEMEN: To end this on a more personal note, the question I like to ask everyone: What is your personal motivation for running all this?
MARCELLA: My personal motivation is that deep down inside I am a people-pleaser. I like seeing people happy and fulfilled by attending meetings, attending events and interacting with one another.
KLEMEN: Well, I can definitely confirm that. So far we’ve had very good experience with the whole event and will be definitely back next year.
MARCELLA: Excellent!
KLEMEN: Thank you very much!
MARCELLA: Thank you!
